It is easy for bands to get lost in the crowd of Kalamazoo's ever budding music scene. Between the growing genre collaborations and the endless talent of musicians and songwriters, it isn't hard to be overlooked. But new comers, Beyond Sight, are refusing to hide in the shadows of other musicians.

Don’t Dodge the Black Lodge If You Love Music

October 20th Show A Black Lodge Presentation

The Black Lodge description on FB read We are "...the shadow-self of the White Lodge. The legend says that every spirit must pass through there on the way to perfection. There, you will meet your own shadow self. My people call it 'The Dweller on the Threshold' ... But it is said, if you confront the Black Lodge with imperfect courage, it will utterly annihilate your soul."

Heavy stuff. But an interesting way to approach music. We sat down with Andy Argo one of the many involved in The Black Lodge and asked several probing questions (Andy Argo was not hurt in the making of this article)

Killing Faith and Holding Strong: An Unalienating Sound

Killing Faith

Not every musical project aims to push the boundaries of musical awareness.

Some don't aim to battle for complete independence from the rest of the crop. Formulating a niche within their sphere of contemporaries is not always of the utmost importance.
Sometimes the strength of these musical acts lies in their simplicity and approachability. Instead of personal, obscure conceptual projects, bands such as these focus on "universal woes" and "connecting with the lowest lows" when searching for an audience; according to Kalamazoo pop-metal/rock group Killing Faith, that is.

How to Deal with the Stresses and Anxieties in the Music Industry

Stan Popovich

By Stan Popovich

Stress and anxiety are very common in today's music industry. As a result, here is a list of techniques that a person can use to help manage the daily stresses and anxieties of their music industry profession.

Sometimes, we get stressed when everything happens all at once. When this happens, a person should take a deep breath and try to find something to do for a few minutes to get their mind off of the problem. A person could take a walk, listen to some music, read the newspaper or do an activity that will give them a fresh perspective on things.

A Hero Falls – Pushing Conformity to the Wayside

A Hero Falls - Stable Ground

Beginning as a cover band playing small local parties and school talent shows, A Hero Falls changed their ways in 2009 to become a full-on rock band.

"All the members of A Hero Falls have been in a band together in one combination or another for a long time," said guitar player Ryan Concienne. "After deciding to write, record, and play original material, we formed the current line-up named A Hero Falls, and haven't looked back."

Outrun the Sunlight – Dawning on the Break of Sound!

Outrun the Sunlight

Outrun the Sunlight (OTS) was voted runner-up in Kzoo Music Scene's poll of best new local band; and for good reason. Their heavy yet melodic sound is purely instrumental with an ambient influence that will keep their listeners begging for more.

Members Austin Peters and Cody McCarty formed Outrun the Sunlight in February of last year. After their former band, Burning Alexandria, broke up due to band members moving out of Kalamazoo in 2010, Peters and McCarty stuck together and created OTS as an exclusively online project.
